You know that it is important to recycle. But there are some products that are VERY important to recycle because they contaminate. Batteries are one of these products.
We are surrounded by batteries. They are useful for watches, MP3s, computer gear, remote controls, flashlights and more. Take a look around your house and we are sure that you will find more than ten batteries being used. If you look in your junk drawer, you will probably find a box of used batteries that no one knows what to do with.
It is important that you don't leave them in their box or throw them in the trash. Batteries have harmful contaminants.
The way batteries produce energy is by using a powerful chemical substance. This substance is bad for the environment. One battery can contaminate 40 liters of water for 50 years!
That's why it is really important that you throw the batteries away in the right spot.
But where can you recycle batteries? Well, most hardware stores have a box where you can put used batteries. Once they collect them they will take them to the correct place to recycle them. In this way, they are able to reuse some of the properties of the batteries and not pollute the environment.
