Sometimes you forget to reapply your sunscreen, or maybe you didn’t put on any at all. Oops!
Everyone slips up from time to time, but being lobster red is a painful way to be reminded of your mistake. How can you get your skin to calm down quickly?
First, head to the store and look for an aftersun lotion. Look out for ones that have aloe vera in them, which soothes the skin and helps it regenerate. You can also try out some homemade remedies, like THESE.
Next, have a cool shower. Your skin is really sensitive right now, so skip the steaming hot shower because it might hurt. Use soap for sensitive skin and DON’T exfoliate or scrub your skin!
Skip shaving until your burn calms down. Hair removal can irritate your skin a little bit, and if you’re burned, your skin has enough stress.
Drink a lot of water. Sunburns can make you really dehydrated, so make sure to drink a lot of cool liquids. Water is great, and fruit or veggie juices are really good too.
Stay out of the sun. You’ve definitely had enough for a while! Wait until the redness goes away to go in the sun again – even with protection. Let your skin recover.
And when your skin is back to normal, enjoy the sun again. But this time, be more careful. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and remember to reapply it.
The general rule is to use about an ounce to cover your body – that’s about how much sunscreen you can hold in the palm of your hand.
Even though it might seem normal to get sunburned, it’s not. It’s not fun either, and can be really painful and damaging to your skin. Remember to put on your sunscreen, Wambie girls!
